Artnoxious : At the Intersection of Pretension, Egomania and Temporal Abundance
Given that we live in a society of exuberant excess, it’s only inevitable that somewhere along the long, dreary path of the soul, we find those who would use our patterns of communication to judge, delineate and define in a way that is not accessible to the casual observer, only after much study and socialization, can one break past this intellectual exclusion and access the intention going into a given work, which, to my great distress, supersedes the varied interpretations of that work in an ephemeral triumph of individual arrogance over group experience. In short, it’s Artnoxious.
Perhaps it stems from an insecurity about one’s position and legacy in the world, or perhaps one seeks to legitimize their use of space, time and resources to make some sort of conglomeration, but statements by artists regarding the intent of their work are, in my uninformed opinion, entirely unnecessary.
If a work requires a starting point for a viewer to understand it, then the work isn’t descriptive enough.
If a work needs unique language to interpret and discuss, then it does not speak to people.
If a work needs justification, then it has no inherent purpose.
What ever happened to art for aesthetic merit? Instead everything has to have a statement attached to it!
Therefore, artist’s statements serve as an excuse for ugliness.
At risk of diving further into my own artnoxiousness, I shall self-terminate now.
